WHERE ARE MY POTENTIAL CLIENTS/EMPLOYERS LOCATED?
When joining this course I had always had my heart set on graduating and moving to London to work in house with a design agency with a team of 10-20. I had also thought that I wanted to go into print based designing as this is what I would enjoy the most.
Unsurprisingly, however, I have started to identify that with the current economic climate, companies are having to reduce budgets and make savings where they can. Graphic design being one of the first things to go. I think it's important therefore to move into more digital, screen-based design where costs can be cut. To me, a company's website is the first thing I look at and the power of which is invaluable.
So not only have I changed my mind in what sort of designing I want to do, I have also started to question where I thought I wanted to do it. I realise that once I graduate, that moving straight to London is something that would be incredible, however, it seems a shame not to make the most of having little/no ties. I have visited Australia twice before and have some ties out there so am currently looking to get in contact with some design agencies out there. I am also going to look at other busy cities such as New York and perhaps Paris. Socially I think it would be really good for me to get further experience with working abroad and can only benefit me as a designer.
WHAT MEDIA DO MY POTENTIAL CLIENTS/EMPLOYERS USE?
I am particularly interested in branding and identity, so I feel that I need to match my own promotional material with theirs. It is important to create a strong creative cv and boost both my professional research through networking within the creative industry and also my industry knowledge. As repeated to us, 'it's not what you know, it's who you know'.
I think by boosting my online presence through: website, social networking-twitter and a professional facebook account. However, I don't think that this is going to be my main priority at the moment. I hope to concentrate on building the strongest pieces of work at the moment, giving me the strongest pieces of work to approach design studios with.

WHAT DO YOU NEED TO COMMUNICATE AND HOW DOES IT MATCH WHAT YOUR CLIENTS/EMPLOYER NEED?
The main requirement at the moment is for a pdf of your 'portfolio' to be emailed to companies. Realistically this is an easy and quick way to communicate how one works. HOWEVER. I don't believe this is the best way to get noticed. I believe what is most important when getting in contact with both clients and employers is not what you have previously done, but showing what you can/want to do for them and the way in which you think. John has made suggestions about how sending companies of obscure images e.g. A crying cat. This will grab their attention a lot more, and make you stand out.
